Why do people think that only Black men are on the Down Low?

Unfortunately, J L King’s bestselling book On The Down Low has given many people the idea that the only married men who cheat on their wives with other men are African Americans.
But is that really true?
Aren’t their closet bisexuals who have relationships with women and sex with men among EVERY race?
Isn’t it unfair, and frankly kinda racist, to claim that Black men are the only ones who do this?

welll, they think that because some black men are afraid to come out because they think they might get killed.
I don’t think he claimed that only Black men do, just that it is extremely prevalent with Black men. Since he is a Black man he can only speak from his experience.
Yes I think it’s unfair. But me being a black woman who love straight men, I am so happy that I have never gone through an ordeal such as this. Because I’ve dated Black, White and Hispanic men, I’m so glad that I knew who and what I was dealing with from the beginning. I know for a fact that if I had gotten into a relationship with any color man and found out that he was on the DL, I would be doing time in jail right now. I can put up with a lot but that would be the straw that broke the camel’s back! If I found out that my man was on the DL I’m not going to be sitting up on Oprah telling my story about how I encountered HIV because my husband or man was living on the DL. If I’m going to be doing an interview it would be from the jailhouse call Scared Straight! Because I do not f*cking play when it comes down to my health. If he killed me, trust me his @ss is hitting the dirt six feet under immediately! Damn the dumb sh!t!
I don’t think his book claimed what you said, nor do I think that it was racist at all. Racist is when one race thinks they are superior over another. Maybe prejudiced is what you were referring to. I don’t think it’s that, either.
I think the whole thing has to do with homosexuality as viewed in the black community. As you know, homosexuality in the black community is not really discussed or accepted. Of course there are situations where it is. Now, this topic drew a lot of publicity because it showed that there were, in fact, many black men who were secretly homosexual and because of the scrutiny aimed at gays in the black community, many of these men were having sex with men outside of their marriages and bringing HIV back to their wives.
Of course, other races have done this too. But this topic just shows the dangers of social stigmas and the consequences of people not being able to be themselves. They put innocent people at risk and live lives of misery.
I agree that any race can be on the Down Low but his book is claiming that it is widespread amongst Black men .
I never thought that. Just that the black community has come up with a term: Down Low. AND its a problem in the black community because its one of the major factor in why 13% of the population accounts for 50% of the AIDS rate, black men not being responsible with their sexual activity, black men killing their wives.
that said, yes its unfair to assume only black men act this way but its also true that this is a pandemic in the African American community.
13% of the US population = over 50% of the US AIDS population…Racism be damned…we’re being annihilated!!!!
i think that its because of the simple fact that there is a thing called pride when it comes to black men it out weighs everything else but you better believe that if he has a real woman she will find out and that’s just going to make the situation worse because women talk and that’s just it he might as well go ahead and say that he’s gay

No, no. You’re correct. But the down low was created to describe black men because homosexuality is typically considered weak or is frowned upon more in the black communities than in others. So yeah, other men do it, too, but that term refers specifically to black men.
